”Two Fish and Some Cover Versions”

by Keith Pengelley and Patrick Devaney

Friday March 21st, 6-8pm BST

Patrick nd I threatened some of our favourite cover versions – of course they may change more often than we change our socks.

But like our socks – they are superb !

Heaven 17 – “Don’t Fear The Reaper” – Before After – 2005

Keith writes:

This has all the attributes of a successful cover version. Radically different yet still retains the essence of the original.

Could be a bit marmite…which is even better. Divide and Rule !

Letters To Cleo – “Cruel To Be Kind” – Ten Things I Hate About You OST– 1990

Patrick writes:

Nice and breezy take on the Nick Lowe tune that has always been a favourite.

Apocalyptica – “Enter Sandman” – Play Metalica by Four Cellos – 1996

Keith writes:

I’m not a Metalica fan as such…but this cover version is the only way to go if you want to cover them.

Four Finns and their cellos…. Devil Horns Up !

Simple Minds – “Street Hassle” – Sparkle In The Rain– 1984

Patrick writes:

I like the military feel at the start of this track, great vocal performance from Jim Kerr.

Songhoy Blues – “Kashmir” – Music In Exile – 2015

Keith writes:

From Mali and from their debut album, Songhoy Blues. Adds to the original in that it ups the exhilaration and exuberance.

Sia – “Paranoid Android” – Exit Music – Songs with Radioheads – 2006

Patrick writes:

Before Sia was the star she is now, quite a gothic sounding interpretation.

Jah Wobble – “Midnight Cowboy Theme” – The Usual Suspects – 2017

Keith writes:

I saw Wobble and his Invaders of The Heart at a local festival some years ago…very enjoyable.

The Usual Suspects a very good entry point for the curious.

Psapp – “Year of The Cat” – The Usual Suspects – 2017

Patrick writes:

The band, a duo consisting of Carim Clasmann and Galia Durant, are sometimes credited with inventing a musical style known as toytronica, a form of electronica made with toys and toy instruments.

The Al Stewart original was a favourite of my dad’s, like the samba feel of this version.

Woodpigeon – “Lullaby” – Mojo cover disc – 2016

Keith writes:

Woodpigeon are a Canadian indie pop collective founded in Calgary and presently based in Montréal. It is led by and performs the songs of Mark Andrew Hamilton.

A great cover…maintains the menacing air of the original.

U2 – “Beat On The Brat” – We’re a Happy Family – 2003

Patrick writes:

Taken from a tribute to The Ramones. Fairly straightforward, but fun.

The Balanescu Quartet – “Autobahn” – Possessed – 1992

Keith writes:

A rather brilliant album. Five covers of Kraftwerk, a couple of Balenescu originals plus a David Byrne cover.

The Human League – “Only After Dark” – Travelogue – 1980

Patrick writes:

A cover of a Mick Ronson tune from his Slaughter On 10th Avenue album; an interesting choice, shouldn’t’ work….. but it does !

Brad Mehldau Trio– “River Man” – The Art of The Trio Vol. 3 – 1998

Keith writes:

Gentle and amusing covers of not only jazz standards but also more contempoary material. Here we have an exsquisit version of Nick Drake’s River Man. The album also contains an intersting version of Radiohead’s Exit Music (For a Film).

My Chemical Romance – “Desolation Row” – Watchman OST – 2009

Patrick writes:

A rip roaring punky pop version !

John Martyn – “Glory Box” – The Church With One Bell – 1998

Keith writes:

An album of covers by a folkie converted to electronica. Well woth seeking out.

The album cover depicts a former church in the village of Roberton in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Martyn, who at that time was living in a nearby cottage, bought the church and converted it into a recording studio.

The Jam – “So Sad About Us” – Extras – 1992

Patrick writes:

One of those when you’re not sure if it’s a cover or not.

Boz Scaggs – “On The Beach” – Out Of The Blues – 2018

Keith writes:

A cover of the famous Neil Song from his album of the same name.

The production on this version is incredible – listen to the drums ! The pace is superb as well.

David Bowie – “I Know It’s Going To Happen One Day” – Black Tie White Noise – 1993

Patrick writes:

A cover of a Morrissey tune from his album Your Arsenal.

Bowie”s vocal on this is quite amazing. I”d argue that it’s one of his best ever covers.

The Chimes  – “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” – The Chimes – 1990

Keith writes:

U2 get the gospel treatment…and like all good covers this vies with the original.

Scala and The Kolacny Brothers  – “Teenage Dirtbag” – Scala On The Rocks – 2002

Patrick writes:

My mum’s favourite song!  Scala have done some amazing covers over the years.

We hope that you have ejoyed the show.
