Two Fish And An Elephant -Featuring Keith’s excursion Into the Asian Underground Scene of the 90’s.

 23rd May, 2025

Welcome to another show where Patrick and Keith play music to one another hope to have you dear listener, along for the two hours programme duration.

Patrick unearths a great set of moving tracks; some taken from a variety of Original Soundtracks and others due to the fact that they are simply bloney fine songs !

Keith had recently been listening to music from the so-called Asian Underground that was influential during the late 90s and early 2000s.

Transglobal Underground – “Delta Disco” – Rejoice Rejoice 1998

Keith Writes:

A very popular festival band during the nineties with a line-up that was ever fluid. “Rejoice Rejoice” was the bands fourth album and was the last to count singer Natasha Atlas as a regular band member.

The seven-piece line-up of this period included British-born Asian musicians sitarist Sheema Mukherjee and percussionist Gurjit Sihra.

The album wa partly recorded in Hungary and featured a number of Hungarian gypsy musicians and the band toured during this period with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.

Aimee Mann – Wise Up”  – Magnolia” OST – 1999

Patrick Writes:

It gained widespread recognition for its prominent use in the 1999 film Magnolia, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. In the movie, the song underscores a pivotal, surreal montage where several characters sing along to the lyrics, creating a powerful emotional thread connecting their parallel struggles.

Leone with Talvin Singh – “Distant God” – “Anokha – Soundz of the Asian Underground”  1997

Keith Writes:

This 1997 album arose from the Anokha music club night, formed by its hosts Talvin Singh and Sweety Kapoor along with music producer/DJ State of Bengal a.k.a. Zam Zaman.

Anokha held weekly sessions at London’s legendary Blue Note venue. Those music sessions and this compilation helped to promote the rise of the Asian Underground movement.

Jimmy Scott – “Sycamore Trees” – “Twin Peaks – Fire Walk With Me” OST – 1992

Patrick Writes:

Performed by Jimmy Scott in a surreal and otherworldly scene set in the mysterious Black Lodge, a central metaphysical space in the Twin Peaks universe. The sycamore trees are symbolic in the series, often marking the threshold between the physical world and the spiritual/otherworldly realm.

Paban Das Baul and Sam Mills – Dil Ki Doya” – Real Sugar” – 1997

Keith Writes:

Paban Das Baul was born in 1961 in West Bengal, India. He is well known for the inspired lyrical beauty of his songs and his genius in improvisation on the dubki (a small tambourine), which gives him the power to create trance-like states in his listeners.

Sam Mills was born in London in 1963. He started playing guitar with 23 Skidoo in 1979 until 1982.

At that time 23 Skidoo were renowned for the intensity of their live performances as they fused the avant-garde with dance rhythms whilst drawing inspiration from bands like Can, This Heat and Fela Kuti.

Sam met Paban in Calcutta and they played together very casually until they had enough material for the Real Sugar album.

I have selected the lead track “Dil Ki Doya” which title translates as “Do you have mercy in your heart”.

Brandon Flowers  Fabulous Las Vegas”  “Flamingo” – 2010

Patrick Writes:

Solo song by Brandon Flowers, the frontman of The Killers, released as the opening track on his debut solo album.

It offers a sobering, poetic counterpoint to the glittering, commercialized image of Las Vegas.

Nitin Sawhney  Acquired Dreams”  “Prophecy” – 2010

Keith Writes:

Nitin Sawhney is a British musician, producer and composer.

Sawhney has been the recipient of numerous awards and has worked and collaborated with a huge variety of artists.

“Prophecy” is Sawheny’s fifth album and followed his breakthrough recording “Beyond Skin” which was released in 1999.

Everything But the Girl – Tender Blue – “Eden” – 1984

Patrick Writes:

A poignant track featured on their 1984 debut album, Eden. The song delves into the emotional unraveling of a relationship, marked by infidelity and the ensuing heartache.

Black Star Liner – Superfly and Bindi – “Bengali Bantam Youth Experience”  1999

Keith Writes:

Black Star Liner were formed in Leeds in 1994, by Choque HoseinTom Salmon, and Chris Harrop. Their music consisted of a mix of Asian music (sitar and tabla), dance music and dub.

They were a relatively short-lived band and Bengali Bantam Youth Experience was their second full album release and was nominated for the 1999 Mercury Music Prize.

Javette Steele – Calling You” – “Baghdad Cafe” OST – 1987

Patrick Writes:

Composed by Bob Telson for the 1987 film Bagdad Café (also known as Out of Rosenheim). Released as a single in 1988, the track became the film’s signature theme and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song at the 61st Academy Awards.  Covered by many including Paul Young.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with Michael Brook – Intoxication –Night Song” – 1996

Keith Writes:

Night Song is a collaborative studio album by Pakistani Qawwali (devotional) singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Canadian musician, guitarist and producer Michael Brook.

The two artists had worked together previously in back in 1990 when Brook had collaborated with Nusrat on his album Mustt Mustt; a collaboration suggested by Peter Gabriel.

The album was released to much critical acclaim and went on to inspire a tribute album that we dip into a little later in this show.

Joe Jackson – Fools In Love” – Look Sharp” – 1979

Patrick Writes:

The track stands out from the more upbeat, punk-inflected songs on the album due to its slower tempo and cynical take on romance. An example of White Reggae trend.

Joi – Sweet Pain Remix – “Star Rise” – 1996

Keith Writes:

In 1997, Real World commissioned the leading artists of the UK’s so-called Asian Underground movement to remix and reshape the back catalogue of the great Pakistani qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Asian Dub Foundation, Nitin Sawhney, State Of Bengal, The DholFoundation and Fun^Da^Mental selected tracks from Nusrat’s classic album Mustt Mustt, while Talvin Singh, Joi, Aki Nawaz and Earthtribe reconstructed cuts from Night Song, the record made by Nusrat and his Canadian collaborator Michael Brook. See above.

Tragically, whilst the project was nearing completion, Nusrat died suddenly, leaving Star Rise as a memorial to this unique artistic visionary.

I have selected Joi’s (a British music collective of Bangladeshi origin) remix of the track “Sweet Pain” which originally featured on Nusrat’s album “Night Song”.

Lamb – Gabriel” – “What Sound”  2001

Patrick Writes:

The song gained notable recognition in Italy after being featured in the 2004 film Tre metri sopra il cielo (Three Steps Over Heaven), introducing it to a broader European audience.

Talvin Singh – It’s Not Over”  “ha” – 2005

Talvin Singh OBE is a British musician, producer, and composer.

Singh is generally considered to have been involved with the subgenre called Asian Underground and more recently Asian electronica.

After collaborating with Siouxsie and the Banshees and Björk in the early 1990s, Singh released his debut album Ok (1998), which received the Mercury Music Prize in 1999.

Singh has since collaborated with a variety of acts including Madonna and Massive Attack.

I have selected “It’s Not Over” from Singh’s second album “ha”

Foo Fighters – Razor”  “In Your Honor” – 2005

Patrick Writes:

A hauntingly delicate acoustic track by featured as the closing song on the second disc of their 2005 double album.

Cornershop – Heavy Soup”  “Hand Cream for a Generation” 2002

Twenty three years old already ! What a great band and what humour..

Another band who weather the comings and goings of members with Tindjer Singh and Ben Ayres ever present from day one.

One of the real greats of Britpop….

Tears For Fears – Good Night Song” – Elemental” 1993

Patrick Writes:

This album marked a significant transition for the band, as it was the first released after the departure of co-founder Curt Smith, leaving Roland Orzabal to steer the band’s creative direction. Written by Roland Orzabal and Alan Griffiths, “Good Night Song” was released as a single in North America and select European countries in October 1993. Interestingly, it was not released as a single in the UK.
