Two Fish And An Elephant-Episode 2

Two Fish and an Elephant – Episode 2

Two Fish and an Elephant now hosted by Patrick Devaney and Keith Pengelley.

Keith writes: Whilst acting for producer on Patrick’s excellent programme Stompin’ at the Savoy we often discussed music outside of his programmes subject matter which is as you may well know, confined to local music between the years 1970-2000.

Given that our musical musings ranged far and wide I invited Patrick to re-vamp 2 Fish and an Elephant by way of being co-presenter.

Patrick writes: Having the opportunity to have my Stomping At The Savoy show produced by Keith, gave us the space to talk about the love of music that we shared, so it became obvious that we would have to do a show together,

The show is a musical discussion with the music being presented by each of us to each of us is a way of us perhaps widening our own musical horizons.

We hope that you, dear listener will not only enjoy our conversation but also contribute by way of contacting us at [email protected]

Europeans – Acid Rain – *** – ***

Patrick writes:

A song that Keith and I have discussed previously; a stand out track from a highly underrated and now hard to find 80’s album.

Brown Spirits – Mind Rocker Pt 1 – Cosmic Seeds – 2025

Keith writes:

A truly exciting duo from Melbourne. This is from their latest album Cosmic Seeds.

Heavily influenced by Krautrock, Deep Funk and Free Jazz, this is the perfect entry point for their musical journeys into deep space…

Omega Nebula – Adversity– *** – ***

Patrick writes:

I had the pleasure of supporting this vibrant Techno Duo when they played at St James in September. This song is full of energy and messages of positivity, and keep a listen out for something for all the geeks at the end of this track.

Robin Trower – Somebody Calling – In City Dreams – 1977

Keith writes:

Whilst undertaking production duties for Patrick recently, Robin Trower’s name came up in conversation.

I thought I would put up this track for all of you…including Patrick of course…

This track is the lead track from In City Dreams which has recently been described by Trower as being his favourite 70s album. It was quite a change in direction for Trower as it moves away from heavy Hendrix based blues rock into a more intimate soul setting.

An album that is well worth check out.

Pat Metheny – Electric Counterpoint 3 remix – **** – ****

Patrick writes:

Keith and I talked about Pat Metheny in the last show, so thought I would play this one for Keith.

Polica – Lately – United Crushers – 2016

Keith writes:

Poliça are an American pop band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, formed in 2011. The band consists of ChannyLeaneagh, Chris Bierden, Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu.

I have chosen this track from their third album as it typifies the Polica “Dream Pop“ sound.

The album was named after the Minneapolis based graffiti artists by the same name.

Bob Marley – Is This Love – Bill Laswell Remix – *** – ****

Patrick writes:

I played a Bill Laswell remix of Bob Marley recently on one of my Citizen-X remix shows.

Nice and chilled re-work of the classic track.

The Cocteau Twins – Blue Beard – Four Calendar Café – 1993

From their 7th album, a typically swirling masterpiece. Also released as a single.

Blue Mountains – Humming Bird – ***** – ****

Patrick writes:

A highly emotional song from local musicians Colleen Irven, Mike Bonsall and Andrew Degmen. Tells the story of how Colleen meeting with her father for the first time as Hummingbirds sang in the background.

Rose City Band – Radio Song – Sol Y Sambra – 2025

Keith Writes:

Led by Ripley Johnson, this is from their very latest album – check out the cosmic steel guitar !

Blue Oyster Cult. Black Blade – N/A – N/A

Patrick Writes:

From their 1980 album “Cultosaurus Erectus” over the top sci-fi lyrics, co-written by Michael Moorcock, sometime collaborator of Hawkwind.

Wooden Shjips – Flight –West  2011

Keith Writes:

Another band that existed as a front for Ripley Johnson….see above. Fantastic drone led voyaging…

Johnson also the force behind Moon Duo.

Craig Armstrong and Bono –Stay – N/A – N/A

Patrick Writes

A re-imagining of the song from U2’s “Zooropa” album, which was originally inspired by the Win Wenders film “Wings Of Desire”. The beautiful orchestration takes this song to a higher level.

Human League – Circus of Death – Reproduction – 1979

Keith writes:

From the band’s debut album.

The only single from the album was Empire State Human that initially failed to chart.

The non-album single from around this time was Being Boiled….Circus of Death was the b-side.

Edward Sharpe and The magnetic North  Home – N/A – N/A

Patrick Writes:

A bit of light relief, a fun song with kooky lyrics

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Tank – 1st Album – 1970

Keith Writes:

Punik  – Punk Bomb – N/A – N/A

Patrick Writes:

Unapologetic, in your face punk from Japan, with a local connection.

Toy – The Reasons Why – 1st Album – 2009

Keith Writes:

From Brighton, similar in vein to Tame Impala and Wooden Shjips….spacey, motorik grooves to play us out.
