“Two Fish And An Elephant – 18/04/25”

6-8 pm, Friday 18/4/25

The Show where presenters Keith Pengelley and Patrick Devaney play music to each other and give each other their opinions and machinations!

On this weeks show:

TeaspoonriverneckTruck (Citizen – x remix) – Teaspoonriverneck2010

Patrick writes:

I (Citizen-X) Remixed the track from the Guernsey bands first album. As it was inspired by the Stephen King film “Maximum Overdrive”, based on his short story, I used speech samples from the film and a few fx here and there in the remix.

MogwaiLion Rumpus – The Bad Fire2025

Keith writes:

Mogwai celebrate turning thirty by releasing their 11th album. Bring far more vocals than previously its a confident move. Different enough to challenge; similar enough to rely on.

Choir Of The Young Believers – Hollow Talk – This Is For The White In Your Eyes – 2008

Patrick writes:

Used as the theme tunes to one of the first popular Scandi-noir TV shows, “The Bridge”, which followed the discovery of a murder on the Oresund Bridge, which spans between Copenhagen and Malmo, and explores issues of the Danes and Swedes historic rivalry.

Nico GeorgisGeographical Observations – Music Belongs To The Universe 2025

Keith writes:

From an album long in gestation (it was recorded between 2021 and 2023 the music takes the US desert for insperation. Recorded in Georgis’ studio in Death Valley, the tracks shimmer and float. The album has been described as “Gymnopedie for the desert”

Robyn Sherwell – Landslide (Fleetwood Mac cover) – Robyn Sherwell – 2016

Patrick writes:

Born in Guernsey, this was the b-side of her first single “Islander”. I love this delicate version of the Stevie Nick’s penned Fleetwood Mac song.

Yo La TengoSinatra Drive Breakdown – This Stupid World 2025

Keith writes:

One of my favourite bands. Incredibly this is their 17th release. I have chosen “Sinatra Drive Breakdown” as I believe it best illustrates the music on this specific album but it could also act as a descriptor for those curious about their previous releases.

I would also say that if Yo La Tengo appeal then I would also recommend music by The Necks.

Counting Crows – Round Here –  August And Everything After – 1995

Patrick writes:

When asked recently by a local newspaper to give my favourite album of the 90’s, this one got the nod, and this song is the opening track that sets the tone for the album.

Mercury RevAncient Love – Born Horses 2024

Keith writes:

Again, another favourite band of mine. Beautiful, beautiful music that combines the American pastoral of Ives with an almost Disney swoon.

The Associates – White Car In Germany – The Affectionate Punch – 1981

Patrick writes:

A forgotten classic from their first album, but which was included on the American version of “Sulk”

Sam Lee – Leaves of Life – Songdreaming – 2024

Keith writes:

Very much part of the Nu-folk phenomena, Sam Lee’s fourth and latest album gives a strong indication of his unique ability to meld the old with the new. With this album Lee continues his association with Bernard Butler who remains in the producer’s chair.

Jerry Harrison And The Casual Gods – Man With A Gun – Casual Gods – 1988

Patrick writes:

Side project of Talking Heads drummer. Great atmosphere, and classic 80’s production values.

Dean Wareham – Yesterday’s Hero – That’s The Price of Loving Me – 2025

Keith writes:

Wareham is quite the Renaissance Man – a musician, writer and actor. Wareham formed Galaxie 500 in the 80s and went on to work to found Luna and then went on to work with Luna bassist Britta Phillips in the duo Dean and Britta. “That’s The Price of Loving Me” is his 4th solo album.

Apparat – Goodbye – The Devils Walk – 2011

Patrick writes:

Another track used as a TV theme. This one was used to great effect in the German language Sci-fi Netflix series “The Dark”, which explores the consequences of time travel.

Anna B Savage – Corncrakes – A Common Turn – 2021

Keith writes:

Anna B Savage is an English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist now based in Dublin. “A Common Turn” was her debut album which was followed in 2023 by “In Flux”. Her latest album “You and I Are Earth” was released earlier this year.

I have chosen the Track “Corncrake”, which has been described as having “…presence, musical style and a lucidity of language that recalls Nick Drake…”

Grant Lee Buffalo – Lady Godiva – Mighty Joe Moon – 1994

Patrick writes:

A favourite of mine from the 90’s, I love the gentle verses, before it builds to a crescendo at the end.

The Songs of Green Pheasant – Dark – Sings The Passing – 2024

Keith writes:

Songs of Green Pheasant is the solo project of Duncan Sumpner, a musician from Heaton Mersey , Stockport. Sumpner’s work is wonderfully idiosyncratic and would again I think be best described as Nu-folk long with Sam Lee (above). If Songs of Green Pheasant piques your interest…then I would also recommend the work of Alistair Roberts, James Yorkston and Darren Haymen.

Genesis – Back In NYC – The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway – 1974

Patrick writes:

As a die hard Genesis fan I’m very excited about the 50th anniversary edition of the classic album “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway’, which is being released shortly.  This is one of the albums best tracks that was recently released as a single.

Jacob Haq – Endless Photon Waltz – single 2019

Patrick writes:

Swedish musician making music using app on iPhones and iPads.  He has an interesting YouTube channel and his music is available through Bandcamp.

Danny Paul Grody Duo – Hawk Hill – Arc of Night 2024

Keith writes:

We play out with too little of the latest from Danny Paul Grody. This track is from his 7th album “Arc of Night” and is credited both to him and musical partner Rich Douthit.

I shall programme in more by Danny Paul Grody in the near future.
