Martin Tolcher

Martin Tolcher’s obsession with music began at a very early age, possibly upon receiving the “Sparky’s Magic Piano” EP in the mid-to-late 1960s. He first started buying records himself at the beginning of January 1973 – when he visited Boots, armed with a record token, and ‘sang’ the Muddy Waters’ blues riff at the shop assistant, resulting in him purchasing both “Blockbuster!” by The Sweet and David Bowie’s “The Jean Genie”…

…However, his record-buying really took-off in 1978, when he secured work in the school holidays at Baker’s Bazaar in St Peter Port.

Martin’s first (and, to date, last) experiences of DJing occurred in the early-1980s, when he and Andy Fothergill hosted a number of Monday evenings at the Savoy in Guernsey. At around the same time, he was Stage Manager for The Pulse Alternative Pantomimes, held at the same venue.

It wasn’t until September 2020 when Martin joined GNet Radio, to present Songs From Under The Floorboards, a 2-hour weekly programme showcasing independently-minded music from the post-punk period (1978) and beyond. Since then, he has also hosted Musica Mundi – a world music show – and a couple of limited series about The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, both of whom performed live in Guernsey in the 1960s.

Additionally, Martin has had a very close association with Producer Biggles for nearly 45 years.

Martin’s favourite record of all time? He hopes to hear it tomorrow!
